Mac And Cheese

Mac and cheese was originally an Italian dish reserved for the upper class. Today, it is viewed as a cost-effective meal that is quick and easy to make. While boxed mac and cheese is a staple in many cupboards, it cannot begin to compare to the rich taste of its homemade counterpart. A basic recipe for homemade mac and cheese combines three ingredients, same as the boxed variety, to form a sauce that is used as a base for the cheese. In truth, it takes just a little bit of extra effort to create a dish that has a significantly better flavor and texture than the dried powdery mix that is found in the box.

There are several variations to the basic recipe that a home cook can use to greatly enhance the dish. One way to vary the recipe is changing the selection of ingredients. Mac and cheese can be made with many different types of macaroni. Traditional elbows can be traded for fun-shaped pasta that will excite the children or elegant cellentani that is sure to impress the most selective adults. The type of cheese used can also be changed or a combination of cheeses can be incorporated to enrich the taste of the dish. Bacon, ham or hamburg can be added along with vegetables like broccoli, carrots and onions. Homemade mac and cheese is often topped with cracker crumbs, breadcrumbs or crushed potato chips and then baked to a golden brown. Using milk, butter and cheese that is low in fat or fat free can make a lighter, healthier meal for those watching their weight. When making homemade mac and cheese, the possibilities are only limited by the chef’s imagination.
